The beauty of the flow of handwritten letters and words, separate from their semantic meaning, has always intrigued me. I learned the art of calligraphy in my youth and entertained myself for hours by forming the contours of each individual letter from various alphabets. I played with endless ways to combine these letters in longer flows of symbols to form words and longer prose. I recall squinting my eyes or looking at the page in a mirror to view how the various designs and textures were displayed in a linear fashion.
Exploring these handwriting
movements is the foundation of my line-driven compositions.I build layers of exaggerated script
movements, with both transparent and opaque media.I first obscure and then lift paint by wiping
and scraping away to reveal parts of the messages below. The interaction of thelayers of overlapping lines, loops and words
(sometimes readable) create my desired text and texture.
